Coahuila Elections: A Test for Ruling Party Morena

Ruling party Morena prepares for elections in Coahuila, where it will compete against the powerful PRI. This will be a crucial test for the leadership and for Andy López Beltrán to reverse a negative image after defeats in other states.

Coahuila Elections: A Test for Ruling Party Morena

As reported by LPO, one of the key figures is Andy López Beltrán, who is already holding meetings in various cities to prepare for an election that the ruling party already anticipates will be difficult, with few expectations of gains. This northern state is one of the few that, to date, Morena has never governed. Nevertheless, it will be a new test for the leadership, and especially for Andy López Beltrán, to reverse the negative image left by the local elections in Durango and Veracruz, where the ruling coalition did not meet its goals and caused certain internal recriminations, particularly against the Secretary of Organization. With the upcoming elections to be held on the first Sunday of June, Morena is already working on the electoral campaign. 'In Durango, the PRI did well because of him, and now he will play a role again,' anticipate in the ruling party to begin mitigating a possible electoral setback. Durazo is going through a crisis in Sonora and is losing his lobbying power to join the Ministry of the Interior (SEGOB). This is why, according to what LPO learned, the Morena leadership is already warning that the 'purple' victory could depend on winning between four and six of the state's 16 local districts. In this context, Coahuila remains a desired objective for the ruling coalition, which next year will try to make inroads to start preparing the ground for the 2029 state elections. The government is accelerating the reconstruction of Acapulco, and in Morena, they are already vying for the 2027 elections. This is why the Secretary of Organization of Morena, Andy López Beltrán, is already working on the electoral campaign. One of the main problems lies in the strength of the PRI. For nearly 100 years, the PRI has held a hegemony, finding in its cities one of its last strongholds. Being one of the few states it still governs, the 'tricolor' is not willing to lose a single district of power and will therefore play hard in next year's elections. In this sense, the 'purple' party acknowledges that Manolo Jiménez 'has great control over the entire state and territory,' which complicates the campaign and the advance of the Morena structure. As LPO anticipated, he has already held some meetings to begin outlining the plan. In 2023, the 'Fourth Transformation' (4T) tried, but its internal divisions facilitated the victory of the current governor, Manolo Jiménez. However, according to sources who spoke with this publication, the outlook does not seem the best for the 4T. Next year, the only national elections will be the local elections in Coahuila, where the local Congress, made up of 25 seats, will be renewed. The number, they anticipate, could represent a significant advance since Morena has never won any, meaning all its local representations come from the proportional system, something the ruling coalition aspires to change for the first time in history in 2026. With this scenario, the 4T leadership anticipates that the election, although it will be small and local, will not be easy for Morena. Additionally, the 4T anticipates that Rubén Moreira, a native of the state, will have an important role in the campaign.
