Mexican Government Shuts Down 13 Casinos Amid Money Laundering Probe

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum justified the closure of 13 casinos, citing a solid legal basis and evidence of money laundering. The investigation uncovered schemes involving cash transactions and links to foreign countries. Grupo Salinas, owner of two of the casinos, is challenging the government's actions.

Claudia Sheinbaum defended the legal basis for these actions. From the National Palace, Secretary of Security Omar García Harfuch explained that after an investigation that began months ago, these casinos were temporarily suspended and blocked, as well as the bank accounts linked to the irregular operations. This was after detecting patterns in physical and digital casinos with cash operations and tax simulation, with transactions to countries such as Romania, Switzerland, the United States, Malta, and the United Arab Emirates. According to the fiscal prosecutor, Grisel Galeano, they operated through the use of large sums of cash, networks that moved these resources from abroad, and operations to hide them. Grupo Salinas will challenge the 4T in the Inter-American Court. Although the names of the casinos involved were not detailed, yesterday Grupo Salinas itself, of Ricardo Salinas Pliego, revealed that two of them belong to them, questioning the action. When questioned by the press about this, Sheinbaum dismissed any political background: 'all investigations have legal support and solid evidence,' she defended. This was not the only challenge made to the president this morning regarding Salinas Pliego's companies, since his television network has also made complaints about recent inspections from the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare. During the morning press conference this Wednesday, the government exposed 13 casinos that were closed after detecting money laundering activities. In this sense, she stated that 'these are routine reviews that are carried out on any company to guarantee labor rights'.
