Mexican Government Unveils Security Plan for Michoacán State

The President of the Republic, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that the Plan Michoacán for Peace and Justice was followed up from the National Palace, aimed at strengthening security and well-being in the state. “At the National Palace, we followed up on the Plan Michoacán for peace and justice. We are strengthening security and well-being in the entity,” Sheinbaum posted on her social media without providing details. She emphasized that the Governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedoya, was present at the meeting. The Plan Michoacán was imposed after the homicide of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, which occurred on November 1, 2025, during the Festival of the Candles, in the midst of a crowd. The murder of the mayor, who had shown his opposition to the Government, had a national impact and pressured federal and state authorities to expand the response to crime in the region. In the days leading up to his death, Mayor Manzo had publicly denounced the existence of extortions, kidnappings, and criminal groups' recruitment centers for minors in his municipality, and had questioned the actions of federal authorities in these matters. In response, the federal government, led by Sheinbaum, presented the Plan Michoacán as a strategy of more than 100 actions ranging from the deployment of security forces to social and development programs to attack the structural causes of violence. In figures, the authority highlighted that 57 billion 564 million pesos will be allocated and the arrival of more than 12,000 personnel from the Defense, the National Guard, the Navy, and the Air Force to Michoacán. In previous official communiqués, the federal government reiterated that it will maintain coordinated work with local authorities and communities. To date, the Government of Mexico has not disseminated details about the mechanisms for evaluating the Plan, nor the methods to transparentize the actions and achievements achieved in the short and medium term. Meanwhile, in Michoacán, reinforced security operations and patrols continue in critical municipalities.
