Thousands Protest in Mexico City Against Violence and Corruption

Thousands of citizens are taking to the streets in Mexico City and over 50 other cities across the country. The main slogans of the protests express frustration with violence, impunity, and demand the resignation of government officials linked to recent controversies. The march, initiated by 'Generation Z' and 'The March of the Hat,' is advancing from the Angel of Independence to the Zócalo. While the main columns of peaceful demonstrators head to the main square, a group, allegedly unaffiliated with the organizers, has been focusing on vandalizing and removing the metal fences set up by authorities to protect the National Palace. In response to attempts to breach the palace, Mexico City police began to push back and repress the protesters. Some citizens, including families with children, moved away from the clashes to avoid tear gas and violence. Key demands include an investigation into the murder of former Uruapan mayor Carlos Manzo and justice for the disappeared. Federal security forces have not intervened in the clashes but are maintaining close surveillance around the National Palace. It is estimated that around 50,000 people are participating in the capital alone. Parallel protests have also been held in other cities such as Monterrey, Merida, and Mexicali.
