Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that the country will not accept any military intervention from the U.S. to fight drug cartels, emphasizing the importance of respecting sovereignty.

Mexico Rejects Any Possible U.S. Military Intervention

Mexico's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, rejected any possibility of a U.S. military intervention on Mexican territory on Tuesday, following U.S. President Donald Trump's statement a day earlier that he would be willing to send troops to combat drug cartels. 'I have told him on every occasion that we can collaborate, that they can help us with the information they have, but that we operate in our territory and that we do not accept any intervention from any foreign government,' the head of state stated firmly during her morning press conference. Sheinbaum also explained that the issue is not new and that the U.S. president has made similar suggestions in previous conversations. 'I have mentioned it many times in the talks I have had with President Trump on the phone. And we are not going to ask for it because we do not want any intervention from any foreign government,' she pointed out. Sheinbaum's statements come a day after Donald Trump stated that he is 'not happy' with Mexico's fight against drug trafficking and does not rule out an attack against the cartels operating on both sides of the border. Since September, the U.S. Army has destroyed about twenty boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, near Venezuela and Colombia, extrajudicially killing more than 70 people, whom they label as 'narco-terrorists.' In recent months, conservative sectors in the U.S. have pressured for a more aggressive response to drug trafficking, while Mexico insists that bilateral cooperation must focus on intelligence sharing, reducing arms trafficking, and absolute respect for sovereignty.
