Cabinet Shake-Up in the Mexican Government

Washington advocates for keeping García Harfuch in his security post until 2027, while in Mexico, a potential move to the Interior Secretariat to prepare for the 2030 presidential elections is being discussed.

Cabinet Shake-Up in the Mexican Government

Security agencies in Washington want García Harfuch to remain in the Secretariat of Security at least until the end of 2027, as they understand that by then, the more tangible effects of the confrontation strategy with organized crime will be evident. Within García Harfuch's staff, three possible successors have even been discussed: Israel Benítez, in charge of Pemex Logistics and at the forefront of the fight against fuel theft, Deputy Minister Héctor Elizalde, or Omar Reyes Colmenares, head of the UIF. «It is very difficult to set up an electoral scheme from the Secretariat of Security, as we are already seeing with the situation in Michoacán,» sources close to the police have hinted. From the Secretariat of the Interior (Segob), it would be easier to build political alliances, promote governors in the midterm elections, and begin to build García Harfuch as an electoral project. The obstacle is in the United States. None of the options would be viable for the U.S., which prefers to leave the entire security scheme unchanged. For Washington, the high perception of insecurity recorded in the latest INEGI survey or the increase in disappearances are secondary issues compared to the central objective of maintaining a permanent war with drug cartels. The government is dominated by all kinds of readings and interpretations about the cabinet changes that Claudia Sheinbaum might decide on in the final stretch of the year. The uproar generated by the execution of Carlos Manzo in Michoacan accelerated the perception that it is a priority to adjust the official cast to avoid a greater erosion of the presidential image. There is a near-unanimous consensus that an adjustment in the Secretariat of the Interior is now unavoidable: Rosa Icela would be sent to the IMSS — which she had requested during the 2024 transition — and this opens the possibility of choosing a profile that will redefine the operation of a government that is increasingly complicated by social protest. For some months now, as reported by LPO, the one promoting himself for the position is the governor of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, who has improved his direct relationship with Sheinbaum and guarantees a certain order among the various groups of Morena. However, in recent days, the option that is gaining ground is that of Omar García Harfuch, the most decisive official in the cabinet who could now be in charge of governability issues. Sources close to the secretary are pushing for the change because they believe that the Segob is a more suitable platform for the 2030 project.
