Mexican Senate Approves List of Candidates for Attorney General

The Mexican Senate has approved the list of candidates for Attorney General of the Republic (FGR). Ernestina Godoy, the current acting head, is among the prominent candidates. The decision marks a key step in the appointment process for the country's top prosecutor.


The Senate of the Republic approved this Tuesday the list of candidates for the position of Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), and among the names, Ernestina Godoy, the current head of the autonomous body, stands out. By a qualified majority, with 88 votes in favor, 28 against, and five abstentions, the list of candidates for the position of head of the FGR was approved, the Senate reported through social networks. Therefore, the format for the debate of the shortlist sent by the head of the Federal Executive Branch is established, in the procedure for appointing the head of the Attorney General's Office. Alejandro Gertz Manero resigned as Attorney General of the Republic to become an ambassador in a 'friendly country'; however, before leaving his post, he appointed Ernestina Godoy as the Prosecutor for Competitive Matters, who is one of the 10 candidates to officially become the head of the FGR. One of the names that was removed from the list was that of Alfredo Berreda, who, according to PRI Senator Claudia Anaya, was a 'critic' of the current government.
