Guanajuato Congress Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

The Congress of the state of Guanajuato approved reforms to the Civil Code on marriage, including the recognition of same-sex marriage and the prohibition of conversion therapy. The decision was passed by a majority of 25 votes in favor and 9 against. The reforms change the definition of marriage to 'the free union of two people', which legally recognizes any union regardless of sex. This decision aligns the state's legislation with national standards on human rights. Lawmakers noted that the reforms are a recognition of equality and an end to discrimination. In the same session, a ban on conversion therapy with criminal penalties for its practitioners was also approved.

Quotes: 'With this resolution, Guanajuato is settling one of its debts in terms of human rights,' said Deputy Sandra Alicia Pedroza Orozco. 'The approval of equal marriage in the law was not a mere formality, a symbolic act, or a concession, but the message and proof that in Guanajuato, the right to love whomever we want, regardless of their sex, must be a right for all people without any discrimination,' she added.
