Internal PAN Split Leads to Chaotic Senate Vote

The National Action Party (PAN) is facing an internal crisis following a chaotic vote in the Mexican Senate to select the new Attorney General. The party's Senate coordinator, Ricardo Anaya, failed to secure a unified 'no' vote for the candidate, Ernestina Godoy, leading to a split. PAN senators voted in three different ways: six against, eleven abstained, and three, including Anaya himself, voted in favor. This division has angered the party's leadership, which has accused Anaya of undermining unity and warned that the country is heading towards a 'dictatorship'. Martin Arango Garcia, a PAN leader in Queretaro, justified the split by stating that the vote of the state's senators should be respected. Meanwhile, representatives from the ruling MORENA and PRI parties mocked the PAN's lack of coordination. In response to the fallout, Anaya held a press conference to demand that an official document be added to the Senate's records, clarifying that the PAN's parliamentary group position was against Godoy's appointment.
