Sheinbaum Confident in Reaching Water Agreement with US

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that she is confident an agreement will be reached with the United States on the water issue. During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum recounted that yesterday, as planned, the first meeting between officials of both countries took place. The Mexican authorities presented an initial proposal that was rejected by the U.S. government. Consequently, Mexico made another proposal, and another meeting is scheduled for today. "We want to comply with the treaty, but according to the characteristics we have at this moment," she detailed. Sheinbaum responded to Trump that it is impossible to deliver the water as demanded, but she is betting on an agreement. "We are continuing to work for January, February, March." She assured that it is very favorable for Mexico, and additional minutes to the agreement may be required. Last Sunday, President Donald Trump threatened Mexico with 5% tariffs if it did not deliver 246 million cubic meters of water from the Rio Grande basin to Texas farmers before the end of the year. "This is not a matter of Mexico's bad will to say 'we don't want to deliver water', no," she said. Claudia Sheinbaum informed that talks regarding water between the governments of Mexico and the United States will continue this Wednesday to reach an agreement that will not affect domestic water consumption either. "We are seeking to comply with the treaty without affecting water consumption and with all the governors to avoid a conflict between us. We can agree, if there is no other real issue from the United States, which I hope there isn't," she said. Questioned about whether she considered renegotiating the 1944 Water Treaty, the president again ruled out this scenario, as she has done previously. The statement came a couple of days after the in-person meeting both leaders had in Washington, within the framework of the World Cup draw.
