Sheinbaum Confirms 'Somos México's' Right to Political Party Registration

President Claudia Sheinbaum affirmed that the organization 'Somos México' has the right to seek its registration as a political party and to gather signatures for that purpose, although it must comply with the legal provisions in this regard. During her morning conference, the head of state noted that any group has the right to present its application to the electoral authority. 'They have the right to present a proposal with signatures and present a proposal,' she said, although she clarified that she does not know in detail the group's proposal. 'I will be very frank, I have not seen the proposal they present.' 'Somos México', an organization seeking its registration as a political party, reported that it has collected more than 140,000 affiliations, with the expectation of reaching the more than 256,000 signatures required by law to participate in the 2027 elections. Sheinbaum explained that the issue is being addressed in parallel with the work of the commission created for electoral reform, whose consultation forums have already concluded. She indicated that the objective was to gather citizen opinions and that the government's proposal could be made public early next year. 'We would be making the proposal public early next year, perhaps mid-January.' Regarding the content of a potential reform, the president reiterated her stance in favor of democratic representation, but questioned the current mechanism of proportional representation lists. 'They are chosen by the party leaderships, although in Morena they are by lottery, but they are chosen without the participation of the people,' she pointed out. She also proposed to review the amount of resources allocated to elections and the organizational structure of the electoral system. In that context, she stressed that access to popularly elected offices should depend on the citizen vote. 'To win a congressional seat, a mayorship, or a governorship, you have to convince people, you have to win the vote of the people in an honest, transparent, and clean manner,' she stated. The president recalled that current legislation only allows for the registration of new political parties after a federal election, every six years, and they must comply with both assemblies and a minimum number of members. She added that, so far, 'there are two or three groups that have more or less been complying with what is required,' but it will be the National Electoral Institute (INE) that will determine if they can participate in the 2027 elections. Sheinbaum also pointed out that new parties that obtain registration must compete without coalitions and reach at least 3% of the vote. 'If they do not have 3%, even if they have met all the requirements, they are not given the registration to be able to participate later,' she explained. Finally, she recalled that she is familiar with the process of creating new parties, having participated in the registration of Morena in 2015, and reiterated that any definition regarding new political forces will correspond to the INE, in accordance with the review it carries out of each application.
