Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday called on the United Nations (UN) to 'assume its role' and seek dialogue for peace after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered a blockade against Venezuela. Sheinbaum opened her morning press conference with this issue, urging the use of dialogue, peace, and non-intervention to resolve any international disputes. 'We can always serve as a point of negotiation or meeting if the parties so consider, that is, the parties would have to propose it to us, or otherwise, seek mediators who could prevent any conflict in the region,' she said. Sheinbaum also called for caution regarding Trump's statements, noting that the communiqué issued by the Republican leader refers to oil tankers already under sanctions. In a social media post, the U.S. president claimed that the Maduro regime is 'completely surrounded by the largest naval force ever assembled in the history of South America.' Based on this, he designated the Venezuelan regime as a foreign terrorist organization. 'Today I order a total and complete blockade of all authorized tankers entering and leaving Venezuela,' Trump stated. This came 48 hours after the U.S. leader stated in an interview with Politico that 'Maduro's days are numbered.' The move is part of a series of U.S. naval operations in the Caribbean. 'The illegitimate Maduro regime is using the oil from these stolen fields to finance itself, narcoterrorism, human trafficking, murder, and kidnapping,' he said. 'We can seek a dialogue.'
