Sheinbaum Rejects U.S. Criminalization of Migrants

The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, expressed her energetic rejection of the criminalization of migrants by the Government of the United States, in response to the national message from President Donald Trump.

During her morning conference, Sheinbaum stated that "the criminalization of migrants is an act of inhumanity and creates problems," by questioning Trump's discourse that holds migrants responsible for the deterioration of the U.S. economy and society.

The head of state reiterated that Mexico will not support punitive actions against those seeking to cross the border and defended the need for policies that address structural causes such as poverty and inequality.

On International Migrant Day, Sheinbaum insisted on prioritizing international cooperation and regional development: investment in origin countries, comprehensive protection for migrants, and economic and social alternatives to prevent forced displacement.

Similarly, she denied that the common border is "one of the most insecure in the world," highlighting its very high daily activity and labor, educational, and health ties between the two countries.

The Mexican Government reported progress in consular assistance: more than 130,000 repatriated assisted in 2025, 9,300 visits to detention centers, and 17,000 external legal advice provided. These programs aim to strengthen the protection of nationals subjected to detentions or migratory legal processes in U.S. territory.
