The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, defended the sending of Mexican oil to Cuba by stating that it is a sovereign, legal, and humanitarian decision, framed within a historic relationship of cooperation between the two countries.
During her morning conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum emphasized that the energy assistance complies with international law and Mexican legislation.
«It is important that this be known… first, we do it within a legal framework as a sovereign country, and second, we continue a series of supports that our country has historically given to Cuba,» she stated, according to the Argentine News Agency (NA).
The head of state underlined that the oil agreements between Mexico and Cuba are not new, but rather form part of a policy sustained for decades, beyond changes in government or political sign.
In this context, she reviewed milestones in the bilateral relationship, such as the visit of former Mexican President Luis Echeverría to the island in 1975, the first by a Mexican head of state after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, and the links subsequently maintained between Fidel Castro and other Mexican presidents.
Sheinbaum also requested the state-owned oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) to present a detailed report on the crude oil shipments made during her administration, with the aim of transparentizing the cooperation and reaffirming that the actions «are within the law».

The president also reiterated her rejection of the criticisms from the United States government, which asked Mexico to reconsider its relationship with Cuba, and reaffirmed that her management will continue to support the Caribbean nation under principles of solidarity and humanitarian aid.
