The United States Embassy in Mexico issued a series of 'basic security recommendations' on Tuesday for its citizens residing in or visiting the Latin American nation during Christmas and New Year celebrations, while noting that crime in the country 'increases during the holiday season.'In a list published on the social network X and titled 'Safety Tips for Holidays for U.S. Citizens in Mexico,' the diplomatic mission asked its nationals, among other measures, to protect their homes, travel with caution, be alert in public places, and share their itinerary with trusted individuals. To prevent thefts, the U.S. Embassy called on its citizens to secure doors and windows properly, use their alarm system constantly, and keep valuables out of sight, using timers or lights to make the house appear occupied. If they go on vacation or rest, they were advised not to post travel plans or real-time updates on social media and to share their itinerary only with trusted people. They also called on them to remain alert in public spaces and pay attention to their surroundings in crowded places like shopping centers and markets, as well as to keep their bags closed. In the case of vehicles, they advised them to park in safe and well-lit places and not to leave visible belongings inside the car.To avoid fraud, the diplomatic mission recalled that during this time, scams and 'phishing' attempts—online fraud committed by cybercriminals—increase, so they asked to verify messages before clicking on links or making donations. As a preventive measure, they called on their citizens to keep their phones charged, save emergency numbers, and identify exits and safe areas in public places. In recent years, given the growing violence and insecurity in various states of Mexico, the U.S. diplomatic mission has issued various security alerts and notices for its nationals when traveling to and within the country. On the other hand, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico called on the irregular migrant community to register before the end of the year in the CBP One app to receive $3,000, a free flight to their country, and the forgiveness of fines or civil sanctions, that is, to accept voluntary repatriation to their countries of origin.
