The president stated, «The effort made is not minor: in a year and three months we have reduced intentional homicides by 37%». She also added that the figure dropped even further in December.
Following the fall of Maduro, Trump warned Sheinbaum: «Something will have to be done about Mexico».
«What needs to be done is to prioritize dialogue above all,» she responded. She recalled that after the Trump administration's statements, the Mexican government amended the Constitution regarding the defense of sovereignty.
Beyond that, Sheinbaum also defended that her government has advanced in terms of security.
«Fortunately, we have very good communication,» she assured, highlighting the good dialogue on security matters with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. Having said that, she said that the «threatening speeches from Trump seem distant».
It is worth remembering that in the context of the detention of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, the Republican president stated that «something will have to be done about Mexico» and that Mexico has not done its part. He also insisted that the fight against drugs must be a shared responsibility.
This Tuesday, Claudia Sheinbaum acknowledged that the stance taken by the Donald Trump government regarding drug cartels and fentanyl «gives them more elements» for an interventionist discourse, but once again rejected that it is a scenario that concerns her.
During her morning press conference, she was questioned if she had gained more clarity on the implications of the U.S. government declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction and the cartels as terrorists in the context of its intentions to have any interference in the country.
«Let's say it gives them more elements, but that doesn't mean it's going to happen,» the president said.
In this sense, she declared that she believes «they must do more on that issue», despite the recent seizure of weapons, which was celebrated by her government.
