US Democrats Warn of Disaster if Mexico is Bombed

75 U.S. lawmakers have spoken out against Trump's plans for military operations in Mexico, arguing that it would undermine decades of cooperation and harm the economies of both nations.

US Democrats Warn of Disaster if Mexico is Bombed

Democratic lawmakers warned U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio of a 'disaster' that would result from bombing Mexico following President Donald Trump's warning to begin ground operations against drug cartels.

A total of 75 legislators sent a letter to Rubio, published online this Saturday, to 'strongly oppose' Trump's 'threats' of military operations in Mexico, where they highlighted 'the renewed efforts' of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in the fight against organized crime.

'Any unilateral action within Mexico without Mexico's consent would destroy trust, annul cooperation with Mexican authorities, and further make it difficult to keep drugs out of the communities we represent,' they stated.

'Any unilateral military action would violate Mexico's sovereignty and tarnish the new era of cooperation that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has begun,' they wrote.

The Democrats, led by JoaquĆn Castro, Gregory W. Meeks, and Greg Stanton, issued their position after Trump's interview on Fox News on Thursday, when he announced he would begin ground operations against the cartels, who are 'governing Mexico,' following the military operation in Venezuela.

Sheinbaum insisted on Friday that this is 'part of the way of communicating' of the U.S. leader, but warned that she 'will seek to make direct contact with the State Department and, if necessary, speak with President Trump to strengthen coordination.'

In their letter, the Democratic lawmakers warned of 'long-range impacts' for U.S. businesses if the bombing occurs, citing that U.S. foreign direct investment in Mexico exceeded $14.5 billion in 2025 and that more than 5 million jobs depend on bilateral trade.

Members of the House of Representatives also considered that the military action would 'undermine' the 'decades' of efforts the United States has made in Mexico against drug supply chains, such as programs to strengthen the rule of law and combat corruption.

And they highlighted that Sheinbaum, who took office in October 2024, 'has strengthened intelligence to combat organized crime, has significantly reduced homicide levels, and has overseen the largest fentanyl seizure in Mexico's history.'

'Under President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico has dramatically increased its cooperation with the United States.'
