Sheinbaum and Trump: Mexico at the center of a diplomatic crisis

Following the intervention in Venezuela, Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected the aid offered by her US counterpart Donald Trump to combat drug cartels. However, the Wall Street Journal reveals that the Mexican government's options are beginning to be limited. In a publication on Tuesday, the newspaper states that 'there are currently no indications that the United States is preparing a unilateral military action,' due to the strong ties between Sheinbaum's security cabinet and Trump's. However, it explains that there are alerts within the Mexican security cabinet about other measures. According to sources cited by the newspaper, the phone call between the two leaders yesterday did not calm the nerves in Sheinbaum's security team. On the contrary, they are carefully analyzing the possibility that the US leader might move against politicians from MORENA accused by the US government of ties to cartels. The cited sources indicate that security officials fear that the Mexican government 'is running out of options,' warning that the president 'is trapped between two powerful men with big egos: Trump and her own mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.'Sheinbaum attacks the opposition: 'Only those who lack internal strength seek intervention.'In this sense, a key element that fueled these fears was the statement made by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador regarding the intervention in Venezuelan territory. Following the detention of Nicolás Maduro, the former Mexican president reappeared on his social media with a forceful message: he qualified the intervention as an attack on the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people and alluded to the episode as the 'kidnapping' of its president. As reported by LPO, the former president's message generated debates within MORENA, which did not expect the position of the former head of state and was more surprised as it marked a different tone from that promoted by the ruling party. While the president showed a more moderate stance, responding to the events with a brief message that she expanded a day later from her morning conference at the National Palace, focusing on the issue of intervention in other countries, the alerts did not subside. According to the newspaper, AMLO's position 'suggested to security officials that the president would have difficulty pleasing both Trump and his nationalist left coalition for much longer,' the cited sources declared.
