PT and Interior Secretariat Agree to Work on Electoral Reform

Mexico's Labor Party (PT) announced its cooperation with the government on a key electoral reform. Following a meeting with the Interior Secretary, the party reaffirmed its support for President Sheinbaum and the 4T project, despite internal disagreements on the reform's necessity.

PT and Interior Secretariat Agree to Work on Electoral Reform

The Labor Party (PT) announced that it has agreed with the Secretariat of the Interior to work jointly on the construction of the electoral reform proposal, within the framework of its commitment to President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Fourth Transformation (4T). This follows a meeting last Friday between its national coordinator, Senator Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, and the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez. In a press release, the PT stated that the meeting took place «in a framework of cordiality and high productivity», and that during the encounter it was agreed «to build together the proposal for the Electoral Reform, which, with certainty, will be a watershed to improve the country's political life and enrich our democratic processes». The party insisted on the importance of maintaining unity with its strategic allies, Morena and the Ecologist Green Party of Mexico (PVEM), by pointing out that the «Let's Keep Making History» coalition will continue to be a key alliance to «guarantee the well-being of the Mexican people». Likewise, it recalled that during its National Congress, the PT's membership unanimously decided to provide «all support and backing» to President Claudia Sheinbaum, and highlighted that the head of state is «taking Mexico to unprecedented levels of development and social justice». The PT also underlined its role in consolidating the project started by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ensuring the continuity of social policies and welfare programs, and reiterated its commitment to deepen the Fourth Transformation «working hand in hand with the Federal Government on the necessary reforms to strengthen institutions and citizen participation». The meeting between Anaya and Rosa Icela Rodríguez came after statements by the PT's leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Reginaldo Sandoval, who questioned the need for an electoral reform last Wednesday. «If we are in power right now, we have the Executive Branch, we have the Legislative Branch, we won the Judicial Branch through election, I ask: is a reform necessary?», Sandoval said. The legislator then pointed out that the PT and PVEM are essential to achieve the 335 votes required for any constitutional reform, and described his party as a «true 4T», consistent since its origin, unlike other allies who, he said, have moved to the right. The lawmaker indicated that his party will wait to see the full content of the electoral reform initiative that President Sheinbaum will define before issuing a final position. Last Wednesday during her morning conference, the president confirmed that the electoral reform proposal is not yet available, but stated that it will guarantee the representation of minorities, so those who obtain a smaller proportion of the votes will be represented. Additionally, she announced that the initiative will focus mainly on reducing the expenses of political parties and electoral bodies without affecting their operation; respecting the autonomy of the National Electoral Institute (INE); it will contain changes to the system for electing proportional or plurinominal representatives so that they do not depend exclusively on the lists of party leadership; it will promote the strengthening of citizen participation in the country's decisions, and will include mechanisms for Mexicans abroad to directly elect their representatives.
