Sheinbaum Defends Mexico's Stance on T-MEC After Davos Dispute

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum softened her stance after supporting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's speech against Donald Trump. She stated that Mexico's government will work to preserve the trilateral trade agreement T-MEC, despite growing tensions between the US and Canada.

Sheinbaum Defends Mexico's Stance on T-MEC After Davos Dispute

The president defended her stance, stating that it is rather different points of view. However, this view is not widely shared by the public and world leaders, who even received Carney's confrontational message with applause. After speaking in favor of the harsh speech that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered against Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sheinbaum nuanced her position the next day and assured that her government will work to avoid a rupture of the trilateral agreement (T-MEC). During her daily conference at the National Palace this Thursday, the president dismissed qualifying the speeches in Davos by Carney and Trump as 'clashes,' as a reporter had suggested when questioning her about the future of the T-MEC, in the context of these events. Without directly mentioning Trump, the prime minister's speech was impeccable in its challenge to the Republican's policies. Meanwhile, Trump maintained the aggressive and threatening tone of his speech, particularly against Europe, which he is pressuring to cede power over Greenland. Sheinbaum celebrated Carney's speech against Trump in Davos: 'Very much in tune with the current moment.' Despite the tense signals that the two North American trading partners sent from Switzerland—an event that Sheinbaum avoided and preferred to send Alicia Bárcena as her representative—the president maintained her message in favor of the continuity of the T-MEC, whose review is scheduled for this July, in an increasingly tense context. 'We are going to work so that it is not broken and it is convenient for the three countries,' Sheinbaum assured. In this sense, she announced that she is seeking meetings with her counterparts from Canada and the United States, without giving further details. Additionally, she reported that next week, the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will travel to Washington where he will have meetings on commercial matters, while this week a team from the security cabinet is in the same city to address issues related to bilateral understanding in this regard.
