Power Struggle in Morena Ahead of 2027 Elections

A political struggle is intensifying in Mexico's Morena party. According to sources, President Sheinbaum and Luisa María Alcalde have agreed to oust current governors of 13 states in exchange for support in holding a recall referendum in 2027. This has created tension within the party and conflicts with other political forces.

Power Struggle in Morena Ahead of 2027 Elections

If opinion polls are to be trusted ahead of the 2027 electoral process, most of the 13 states governed by Morena will be ratified at the polls, and the succession will not depend on the current state executives but on the leadership of Luisa María Alcalde. Among other issues, this is the diagnosis that Alcalde Luján and Andy López Beltrán would have delivered during their meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum at the National Palace, according to operators in the Morena leadership who are aware of the negotiations. According to the same sources, the 13 governors in question would have agreed to promote the recall of Sheinbaum Pardo in 2027 and not in 2028 as was originally planned, in exchange for controlling the candidacies of those who could succeed them in power. In states such as Zacatecas, Campeche, Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Sonora, Quintana Roo and Baja California, the current governors would already have been displaced by Luisa María Alcalde's team, leading the political teams of the respective governors. Thus, the Campechana Layda Sansores, the Guerrero family of the Salgados, the Sonoran Alfonso Durazo or the Cachanilla Marina del Pilar, to speak of examples within the 'guinda' party, would have moved away from the leadership of Morena (by action or omission in their administrations), causing a displacement by figures close to the Mexico City group. Tension deepens in Morena: they accuse Gaby Jiménez of voter transportation in Miguel Hidalgo. Regarding Mara Lezama and Ricardo Gallardo, both would be involved in the problems of the Green Party's leadership, which demands that Morena cede nominations in both states, even though in Quintana Roo the Green Party is not as strong as Morena, while Gallardo seeks to impose his wife on the power seat, Senator Ruth González. The same is happening in the state of Zacatecas, where Beto Anaya's Labor Party demands preference with the aim of even proposing Saúl Monreal, despite the anti-nepotism clause approved by Morena. For now, along with Baja California Sur, Colima, Nayarit, and Tlaxcala, the leadership of Luisa María Alcalde consulted with Sheinbaum Pardo awaiting instructions. The offer is tempting: a recall that will become a ratification in 2027, in exchange for loosening up the party and the governorship candidacies a little.
