Broad Democratic Front Created in Mexico to Defend Democracy

Former lawmakers, academics, and civic activists have announced the creation of the Broad Democratic Front in Mexico. The goal of this new, non-partisan, citizen movement is to counter what they see as the risk of democratic regression from an eventual political reform imposed without consensus. The Front aims to protect the country's electoral autonomy, political pluralism, and constitutional balance.

Broad Democratic Front Created in Mexico to Defend Democracy

The defense of democracy cannot be the exclusive domain of a single political force or subject to short-term calculations. It requires historical responsibility, a state vision, and unity. The purpose is not to preserve privileges or a failed model, but to protect the basic rules that guarantee freedoms, rights, and effective representation.

Goals of the Front The Broad Democratic Front has as its immediate objective to prevent a regressive political and electoral initiative from prospering. "Faced with this, organized civil society has the historical responsibility to act," they state.

The Broad Democratic Front is not defined against individuals or parties, but against authoritarian practices that seek to close the possibility of political alternation and concentrate power.

Former lawmakers, academics, researchers, jurists, analysts, activists, and citizens announced this Tuesday, February 3, the creation of the Broad Democratic Front, which emerges in response to what they highlight as "the risk of a democratic regression derived from an eventual political-electoral reform imposed without consensus."

Highlighted as a citizen, pluralistic, and non-partisan front, its purpose is "to defend democracy and freedoms in Mexico."

"The Front arises in a context of high institutional tension, marked by reform proposals that, far from strengthening the democratic system, put at risk the autonomy of electoral authorities, political pluralism, and the constitutional balances that have given stability and legitimacy to the country's public life," the communiqué reads.

Front members emphasize that Mexico did experience a democratic transition, built from dialogue, pluralistic inclusion, and agreement between political forces, civil society, and citizenship. That process allowed for the construction of rules, institutions, and checks and balances that are today at risk of being weakened by unilateral decisions from power.

"The democratic method—based on consensus, deliberation, and respect for plurality—has been displaced. In the event that a reform is discussed, it could only be considered legitimate if it explicitly and verifiably guarantees: — Authentically autonomous and impartial electoral authorities and courts; — Free, fair, and competitive elections with a real possibility of alternation; — Strengthening the notion of citizenship by promoting informed, conscious participation exercised from the full autonomy of the will; — Legislative representation proportional to the citizen vote; — Prohibition of mechanisms of overrepresentation; — Respect for political pluralism and constitutional limits for the reform of the democratic system."

Final Call We call on: — Citizens committed to their freedoms; — Academics, jurists, and defenders of the rule of law; — Organizations of civil society and social movements; — Political parties with a democratic vocation; — The conscious youth of the country who will inherit these decisions — to build a Broad, Responsible, and Peaceful Front that defends democracy, rights, and the institutional future of Mexico.

History is watching us.

It is a space outside of party politics.

Its Manifesto In addition to the creation communiqué, the Manifesto from which the Front emanates was shared with this medium:

What is at Stake The main reason for the existence of this Front is not to allow, admit, or act to prevent the restoration of the old regime in any form or denomination. The imposition of a reform without the consensus of all political currents, including opposition ones, would reflect the true intention to close any possibility of political alternation.

No to sectarianism, yes to unity This Front does not belong to any ideology or party. It is not built against people, but against practices that endanger democratic balances.

Silence is also a form of complicity.
