Mexico Condemns US Sanctions Against Cuba and Continues Humanitarian Aid

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country will continue to provide humanitarian aid to Cuba, condemning U.S. sanctions that impose tariffs on nations exporting oil to the island. She described these measures as "very unjust," as they directly affect the population rather than the authorities. "We are supporting all diplomatic actions to prevent tariffs from being imposed on Mexico for sending oil to Cuba. No one can be indifferent to the situation the people of Cuba are facing due to the sanctions being imposed in a very unjust manner," the head of state stated. Sheinbaum also emphasized that Mexico will continue diplomatic efforts to resume hydrocarbon shipments and express disagreement in international forums. "We will continue to support the people of Cuba, as people in need are always supported. The sanctions that harm the people are wrong. That is the essence of the Mexican people, the brotherhood of support," she added. At the same time, she declared that if the sanctions are implemented, Mexico "will not change its legislation," and "the resources will not be handed over" to the U.S., as has been theorized. In this context, the Mexican government had previously sent its first shipment of humanitarian aid to Cuba, mainly consisting of food. Sheinbaum also mentioned that over 200 mining concessions will be returned to the Mexican state, without specifying which ones or when. Regarding another issue, the tragedy of ten kidnapped miners in Sinaloa, the president expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that the government is "close to the families so that a similar situation does not happen again." She reported that authorities are investigating all the circumstances of the case and are in contact with the mining company. The first four detainees in this case provided information that led to the discovery of the bodies. The whereabouts of the remaining nine miners remain unknown. In response to questions about Bad Bunny's performance at the Super Bowl, Sheinbaum called the show "very interesting," in contrast to President Trump's criticism. She praised the message of continental unity that the artist conveyed.
