Mexican Columnist Summoned to Prosecutor's Office for Criticizing Authorities

Columnist Ulises Rodríguez reported that he was summoned by the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) to appear this Wednesday at 11:00 AM before the Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Combating Corruption, following a smear campaign against him for criticizing the state government's works. Rodríguez anticipated that the summons is linked to his investigation into the lease of the Coloso del Pacífico baseball stadium by Governor Miguel Ángel Navarro Quintero to federal deputy and Morena union leader Pedro Haces. "I am being summoned for my investigation into the delivery of the Coloso del Pacífico. This is naturally a strategy of intimidation," the columnist stated. Rodríguez warned that the prosecutor's office, starting with this summons, wants him to file a formal complaint against the governor over the stadium situation and to simulate investigations, as it will be the same Prosecutor's Office that will determine whether it has a foundation or not. In a video message, Rodríguez assured that he will attend the appointment with his lawyer and took the opportunity to defend his work and his right to freedom of expression. "I am convinced that it is possible that they will impute a crime to me that I certainly did not commit. I always speak with foundations, with evidence," he said, and called on citizens to maintain their criticism of the state government. The columnist described the handling of the Coloso del Pacífico as scandalous, estimating that more than 700 million pesos of public funds were delivered to private interests, and for this reason, he decided to expose documented information. "That money that could well have been used for many other things ended up in the hands of deputy Pedro Haces, and that was because Governor Navarro Quintero owed him a payment for political favors in 2021," he explained. Similarly, he took the opportunity to question the FGE's performance during recent disturbances in the state, which included blockades and vehicle burnings after an Army operation against the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). "We observe a totally weakened Attorney General's Office, they remained silent, they made a complete retreat," he stated. However, the columnist pointed out that the prosecutor's office has shown strength in questioning critics, union leaders, and activists, against whom it initiated judicial processes, but not against organized crime. He added that a large part of Nayarita territory, including municipalities such as Huajicori, has been facing a security and humanitarian crisis for almost two years, without the situation being able to be stopped. Rodríguez concluded that he will report on the development of the process and reiterated that his objective is to make visible the alleged irregularities of the state government and the Prosecutor's Office.
