U.S.-Mexico Naval Exercises: Cooperation Against Threats

The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, part of its carrier strike group, conducted joint exercises with the Mexican Navy as part of the multinational 'Southern Seas 2026' maneuvers. This move is part of a new military coalition, the 'Shield of the Americas,' aimed at combating drug trafficking in the region. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico emphasized that the carrier's presence reflects a 'modern and dynamic partnership' between the two countries, based on trust and a shared commitment to security against common threats like drug trafficking, arms trafficking, and human trafficking. The U.S. Fourth Fleet command stated that the exercises aim to 'improve interoperability and increase competence with the forces of our partner nations in the maritime domain,' as well as to strengthen alliances and regional cooperation. In turn, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum commented, stating: 'We are governments of the people, by the people, and for the people of Mexico. Together we are stronger, and criminals will have nowhere to hide.'
