Opposition Criticizes 'Plan B' Electoral Reform in Mexico

Opposition leaders criticized the 'Plan B' electoral reform, arguing it gives President Sheinbaum an advantage in her campaign. Carolina Viggiano (PRI) stated that the governor's enemies could do the same to the president, recalling billboards put up by López Obrador in Hidalgo. Marko Cortés (PAN) disputed the 30% turnout figure and claimed the reform doesn't cut costs but gives money for self-promotion, citing the recall of Oaxaca's governor. The opposition argued the reform merely allows the president to avoid elections. In response, the PVEM boasted of a 60% turnout in Oaxaca, to which the opposition retorted it was a 'mess'. During the debate, PT and Morena members were present only for a photo but did not participate in the commission discussions.
