Tabasco Prosecutor to File Charges Against Former Security Secretary

The Attorney General's Office of Tabasco has a 15-day period to file the formal charge against Hernán Bermúdez Requena, after this Tuesday the complementary investigation stage concluded, as per the deadline set by control judge Ramón Adolfo Brown Ruiz.

During this period, the Attorney General's Office, headed by Óscar Tonatiuh Vázquez Landeros, must formally present the charges and the evidence that supports the accusations for criminal association, kidnapping, and aggravated extortion. The state Attorney General's Office initially had a three-month deadline to close the complementary investigation; however, it extended this period with judicial authorization until this week to strengthen the integration of the investigation file.

During this stage, the authorities have gathered evidence, testimonies, and other data that will be presented in the next phase of the criminal process. In an interview with the media, state Attorney General Vázquez Landeros highlighted that “there is no knowledge” of an extradition request against Bermúdez Requena. He clarified that his institution continues to coordinate with the Attorney General's Office of the Republic (FGR) and “as of this moment, there is no knowledge” of an international request.

In parallel, the defense of Hernán Bermúdez Requena has filed legal resources that could affect the course of the case, due to the possibility of facing a procedure abroad. The Tabasco prosecutor also clarified that the crimes for which the former Secretary of Public Security is accused are both under common and federal jurisdiction.

He has pointed out the existence of a federal arrest warrant still pending, which keeps other lines of investigation against him open. If the Attorney General's Office presents the charge within the established period, the judge must convene a preliminary hearing, a phase in which the evidence will be reviewed and it will be defined which will be admitted in a potential trial. This stage can extend for several months and will be decisive in establishing if the case has the necessary elements to proceed to trial.

Bermúdez Requena served as Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Tabasco during the government of Adán Augusto López Hernández, between 2019 and 2021. He is accused of being the presumed leader of the criminal group 'La Barredora', an organization linked to high-impact crimes in the entity. The former official was arrested and subsequently linked to the process in September 2024, for which he remains in preventive detention at the Altiplano federal prison.
