Mexico President Criticizes Senate's Decision on Electoral Reform

The president criticized the result of the vote in the Senate, which excluded from 'Plan B' one of its most sensitive points: the possibility of holding a recall election in the mid-term elections next year. She insisted that behind this result there were political calculations rather than substantive ones. 'One thing is a recall election and another is an election,' Sheinbaum stated. She considered that the proposal was not approved because the parties feared that if the president were on the ballot without campaigning for any particular political party, some parties would get more votes than others. Around midnight yesterday, the Senate approved the electoral reform proposed by the president, known as 'Plan B,' but left out the provisions regarding the recall of mandate that proposed its execution in 2027, after the refusal of the PT, as well as the PRI, PAN, and Citizen Movement. Of all the arguments given yesterday, not one was presented for why the recall could not have been held (in next year's elections). Despite this setback on this point, the head of state highlighted that the reform did advance on what she considered its central axis: the reduction of the 'privileges' of electoral officials, one of the main arguments of the ruling party to push for the changes. With this change, the initiative was sent to San Lázaro. This Thursday, the president responded with criticism from her Morning Press Conference at the National Palace: 'I think it's bad for the country that it wasn't approved, but that's how they decided,' although she later qualified when asked why it would be bad for the country: 'It's not that serious either, but I think it would have been very good,' she said. The possibility of holding the recall referendum generated the greatest tension between Morena and the allied party, the PT.
