MORENA to Ban Family Members of Current Officials

The National Council of MORENA has announced it will not field relatives of current governors, mayors, and deputies in the 2027 elections. This rule will apply both within the party and in coalitions, even if allies like the Green Party plan to nominate such candidates. The decision is part of an anti-nepotism effort.

MORENA to Ban Family Members of Current Officials

The National Council of MORENA has determined that it will not field relatives of current officeholders. This rule will apply both within the party and in coalitions. 'We decided several months ago that we will not bring forward relatives of those who are currently in power,' stated in an interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva. Candidates will not be able to circumvent MORENA's statutes. There will be no exceptions, even in the specific case where the Green Party (PVEM) decides to make her their candidate; in that case, we would not go into alliance,' he reiterated. Political parties will not be able to field family members for elected positions. It should be recalled that in 2025, a reform against nepotism and re-election was approved, although the changes to the law will not come into effect until 2030. On the one hand, it was established that re-election will not apply to individuals who held an elected office in the immediate previous period. Additionally, a suitability requirement was proposed so that candidates for elected office do not have a marital or sentimental relationship, nor a consanguineous or civil relationship in the direct line without limitation of degree. This will apply to all political parties without exception, but for the 2027 elections, MORENA will begin its internal implementation. 'This is a constitutional reform that will be applied to all political parties in 2030: there will no longer be any relatives who can immediately succeed those who currently govern, whether they mayors, governors, local or federal deputies; there cannot be relatives,' recalled Luisa María Alcalde. On March 10, Saúl Monreal insisted that he will seek the governorship candidacy for Zacatecas and rejected that MORENA's statutes are above the Constitution. Meanwhile, Félix Salgado said that he is not ruling out a possible candidacy for the governorship of Guerrero, a state currently governed by his daughter Evelyn Salgado. Lastly, the PVEM 'unveiled' Ruth González Silva for the governorship of San Luis Potosí. National leader of MORENA, Luisa María Alcalde, sent a clear message to Saúl Monreal, Félix Salgado, and the Mexican Green Ecologist Party: 'We will not carry family member candidates of those who currently govern' for the 2027 election; therefore, they will not be considered in the lists of pre-candidates for the survey. The national leader of MORENA affirmed that for 'principles' she will not accompany candidacies of people with family ties to the one leaving power. However, to date there is no official definition. 'We could not carry relatives, neither MORENA alone nor in alliance. Even if allied parties like the PT and the PVEM contemplate relatives of officials in power, MORENA will not accompany the candidacy, as in the case of Senator Ruth González Silva, wife of the current governor of San Luis Potosí. This could put at risk the alliance between MORENA, PT, and PVEM, as they do not contemplate 'any type of exception.'
