Sheinbaum Responds to Trump After Gulf of Mexico Name Dispute

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to statements by her U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, who last Friday mocked a supposed phone call about changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America".

Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico seeks peaceful relations with the United States and does not want conflicts. "We are partners, we defend our brothers who live there," she stated.

In response to Trump's words, Sheinbaum addressed her supporters: "But yesterday they again said that the gulf is called the 'Gulf of America.' What is the gulf called? — Mexico! — Gulf of... — Mexico!" the crowd responded.

Earlier, Trump, during a presentation of the "Shield of the Americas" alliance in Miami, stated that Mexico owns less than 8% of the territory around the gulf, while the U.S. controls 92%. He also shared a parody version of a conversation with Sheinbaum, in which he allegedly offered to "eradicate the cartels," to which he received a refusal.
