Mexican President Rejects Trump's Proposal to Rename Gulf of Mexico

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to recent statements from U.S. leader Donald Trump, who claimed the Gulf of Mexico should be renamed the 'Gulf of America.' On Saturday, during an event in Zacatecas, the head of state rejected the proposal and made it clear that Mexico is not seeking confrontation but will defend its position. 'We don't want conflicts, but it is called the Gulf of Mexico,' Sheinbaum Pardo said. At an event for the 'Food for Well-being' program in Sombrerete, Sheinbaum emphasized: 'It's not a conflict, and we don't want any problems with the U.S. government, we are partners.' However, commenting on Trump's words, she received direct support from the audience: 'What is the name of the Gulf? — The Gulf of Mexico!' was the resounding answer. Later, at another event in General Pánfilo Natera, the president reiterated that Mexico's foreign policy is based on peace: 'We are a country of peace... and with the U.S. government we want cooperation, not to fight.' She also stressed the importance of protecting Mexicans living in the United States, highlighting the social and economic ties between the two countries. Sheinbaum's statements came after Trump claimed he had decided to rename the gulf to the 'Gulf of America,' arguing that the U.S. would have greater territorial control (92%), the current name is over 350 years old, and the decision was made in about an hour.
