Mexican Families of Disappeared Call for International Cooperation

Sara Hernández, whose husband disappeared in 1977, called the UN's decision on Mexico historic. She criticized the state's inaction, storing reports instead of investigating, and leaving perpetrators unpunished, proving the authorities' inability or unwillingness to hold anyone accountable.

Mexican Families of Disappeared Call for International Cooperation

Sara Hernández, a member of the ¡Eureka! Committee and wife of Rafael Ramírez Duarte, who has been missing since June 1977, stated that the UN's decision to refer Mexico's disappearance cases to the General Assembly is a "very important" and even "historic" moment. She emphasized that storing reports, halting investigations, and leaving the perpetrators unpunished is precisely proof that the state today cannot, or does not want, to prosecute even those disappearances. In March 2024, the National Search Commission (CNB) reported that there were "indications of the location" of Rafael Ramírez Duarte. However, after requesting information, Hernández and her family were summoned to the office of the then head of the commission, Teresa Guadalupe Reyes Sahagún. According to her testimony, they received repeated apologies: "recognize what has been done from 2018 to the present serves little, or not at all, if we still do not know where Rafael Ramírez Duarte is, who disappeared him and that they face justice." Hernández stated that rejecting this international cooperation would be "a deplorable setback" and a position that does not align with the feelings of the families. She also expressed skepticism about the statement from the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), which discredited the UN's findings, concluding: "What can be expected from that commission?". She also added that she knows the names of the perpetrators, including from the Truth Commission's report, and questioned: "How could the Committee on Enforced Disappearances recognize this as sufficient?"
