Nuevo León Reports Sustained Reduction in Lethal Violence

Nuevo León has entered a phase of sustained reduction in lethal violence after years of constant increases, with a 74% decrease in the daily average of intentional homicides. This information was presented by Marcela Figueroa Arce, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, during President Claudia Sheinbaum's morning briefing on Tuesday. The official highlighted that this reduction is observed when analyzing the figures on a monthly basis. According to the data presented by the official, the drop in violence indices is notable when comparing recent periods. "In September 2024, the entity registered an average of five intentional homicides per day, while in March 2026, the homicide average was reduced to 1.29," Figueroa Arce detailed. This change in the crime rate breaks a negative trend that the state had been dragging for almost a decade. According to the historical breakdown of the last 12 years, Figueroa Arce pointed out that "from 2015 to 2024, the trend remained on the rise, and it is from 2025 that a decrease in this crime is observed". Crime Comparison When evaluating the performance of the current security strategy from a broader perspective, the head official highlighted that when comparing the preliminary data of 2026 against the records of 2024, there is a significant 67% reduction in the daily average of intentional homicides. "These results," added Figueroa Arce, "place Nuevo León, along with other entities such as Quintana Roo, in a phase of sustained reduction of lethal violence after years of constant increases".
