March 2026 became one of the months with the lowest homicide rate in Mexico, as this crime decreased by 41% compared to September 2024. Currently, there are 35 fewer crimes committed on the country's streets. This was stated by Marcela Figueroa, head of the National Secretariat of Public Security.
From the National Palace, the official detailed that only 7 states in the country account for 50.2% of homicides, with Guanajuato, Chihuahua, and Baja California leading the national list in this type of high-impact crime.
«The first half of 2026 is also the lowest half in the last eleven years, with an average of 50.8 homicides per day,» she said.
What high-impact crimes have decreased in Mexico?
Meanwhile, head of the National Executive Secretariat, Marcela Figueroa, highlighted that the rate of femicide in the country has decreased by 14.9%. This figure reflects the results of the federal government's gender-based security strategy.
Additionally, another crime with a significant reduction has been kidnapping for extortion, which has decreased by 36.0%, followed by extortion crimes—such as 'protection money'—with a 17.7% decline.
Other crimes that have seen a reduction include violent robbery of pedestrians, which fell by 11.5%. However, violent residential robbery increased by 2.2%. This is likely due to the Easter holidays, when hundreds of Mexican homes are left vacant.
