The average number of daily intentional homicides in 2024 decreased from 91.7 to 50.8 in the first quarter of this year, representing a 45% reduction, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported. While presenting the crime incidence report for March, the head of state affirmed that the security strategy implemented by her government “is yielding results.” At yesterday's morning conference at the National Palace, she also highlighted the launch of the Command School within the National Security Academy. She added that this school “aims to train the best security secretaries” for the states and municipalities, as well as establish greater coordination between the National Guard and the Secretariats of Security, Defense, and the Navy. Meanwhile, the head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa Franco, announced that from September 2024 to March of this year, the average daily number of intentional homicides decreased by 41%. She specified that this reduction is equivalent to 35 fewer intentional homicides per day, dropping from 86.9 to 51.4. Figueroa Franco emphasized that last March was the month with the lowest number of intentional homicides in the last 11 years. During her speech, she noted that the average daily number of high-impact crimes nationwide decreased by 52%, falling from 969.4 in 2018 to 461.3 from January to March this year. However, she noted, the high-impact crime of violent residential robbery increased by 2.2%, rising from 10.01 in the first quarter of last year to 10.23 in the same period of 2026. Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, reported on the most relevant arrests and seizures that occurred in March. He mentioned that 20,532 extortions were committed, but only 1,100 extortionists were detained. He recalled that since the National Strategy Against Extortion was implemented on July 6, 2025, more than 180,000 calls have been received on the 089 number. García Harfuch added that due to real-time accompaniment, 88.6% of these attempts were prevented. Nevertheless, “20,532 calls were received, representing 11.4 percent, which were consummated extortions that provided sufficient information to initiate more than 6,000 investigations in the prosecutor's offices.” He stated that based on these inquiries, “citizen complaints and the coordinated work of the prosecutor's offices and security institutions have led to the detention of more than 1,100 extortionists in 24 entities of the country.” During his intervention, General Guillermo Briseño Lobera, commander of the National Guard, asserted that highway robbery shows a “totally downward trend.” He emphasized that the reduction in this crime is due to the deployment of more than 20,000 elements on high-incidence stretches in states like Puebla, Hidalgo, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí. “We are coordinated with all instances of the national groupings to receive their complaints,” he commented.
