Claudia Sheinbaum Defends Judicial Reform Amid Challenges

In her morning conference, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, addressed the unconstitutionality proceedings presented by political parties against the recent reform of the Judiciary in the country. Sheinbaum announced that she would send a query to the Legislative Power regarding how to address the suspension that seeks to eliminate the reform from the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

The president emphasized that all constitutional procedures for the reform were fulfilled, despite the challenges from political parties that, according to her, lack legal personality to carry out these legal actions. Sheinbaum stressed the importance of complying not only with the Constitution but also with the Amparo Law.

Regarding the suspension issued by a judge to eliminate the publication of the reform in the DOF, Sheinbaum expressed her surprise, as a similar order had never been received in 30 years. The president questioned the nature of the elimination and announced that the legal counsel of the government would notify the Legislative Power to address this matter.

Sheinbaum criticized judges and magistrates whom she accused of defending their personal privileges against the decision of the Mexican people and of violating the amparo law. The president urged citizens to reflect on the contempt and stressed the importance of respecting the legal procedures established in the Constitution.

In her intervention, Sheinbaum recalled the reform process of the Judiciary initiated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which was backed by a large majority in a popular consultation. The reform received approval from the Congress of the Union and several states of the Republic, despite criticisms and protests from judges and magistrates.

The president pointed out that the reform of the Judiciary aimed to establish stricter criteria for the selection of judges and magistrates, as well as the creation of selection committees based on merit. Despite the controversy generated by the reform, Sheinbaum highlighted the support received from several states and reiterated the importance of respecting the democratic procedure in decision-making.
