Increase in Homicides During López Obrador’s Administration

The López Obrador administration reports nearly 200,000 murders, a significant increase from previous administrations. The security situation remains critical as the violence escalates.

Increase in Homicides During López Obrador’s Administration

The administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador concluded with a preliminary record of nearly 200,000 people murdered, including intentional homicides and femicides, according to official data. Once the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) compiles the information and establishes the final figure, it is likely to exceed the mark of 200,000 crimes during his term.

The number of people murdered during López Obrador's government is 66% higher than that recorded during Felipe Calderón's administration, which had around 120,000 intentional homicides, not including femicides. Additionally, it is 28.1% higher than during Enrique Peña Nieto's administration, with 156,000 intentional homicides and femicides recorded since 2015.

The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) reported that, as of September 2024, there were 23,378 reported murders in Mexico, 22,754 for intentional homicide and 624 for femicide. Eighteen states showed an increase in the number of victims compared to the same period in 2023.

Significant increases were noted in states like Tabasco (233%), Baja California Sur (182%), Chiapas (67.9%), Aguascalientes (48.6%), Nuevo León (25.8%), Nayarit (22%), and Sinaloa (13.5%). In the latter, the dispute between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, Los Chapitos and La Mayiza, has resulted in an alarming increase in homicides since September, following the surrender of Ismael "el Mayo" Zambada to the United States.

In Sinaloa, the monthly number of intentional homicides rose from 42 between January and August to 143 in September, an increase of 240%. This escalation in violence has led to reports of missing persons and vehicle thefts, among other crimes linked to the feud between the cartel factions.
