The national leader of the National Action Party (PAN), Marko Cortés Mendoza, has expressed his concern about the constitutional reform proposed by Morena in Mexico, stating that the country is in a "state of emergency." Cortés warns that this initiative poses a serious risk to democracy and human rights by attempting to modify the Amparo Law.
According to Cortés, the reform presented by Adán Augusto López, parliamentary coordinator of Morena, aims to obstruct the possibility for citizens to file amparos against constitutional reforms. This measure, in the opinion of the PAN leader, constitutes a regression in human rights by limiting legal resources that protect citizens from potential abuses of power.
Cortés has emphasized that the Morena proposal endangers the independence of the Judiciary and weakens the Supreme Court's ability to safeguard human rights. In his words, "They are transgressing all limits and will leave Mexicans without protection against any abuse of power."
In his critiques, the PAN leader has labeled the reform as a "madness of power," accusing the Morena government of wanting to establish an autocratic regime. For Cortés, this modification to the Amparo Law would be a severe blow to democracy, equating it to the situation in nations like Cuba or Venezuela, where citizens lack protective mechanisms against governmental abuses.
Furthermore, Marko Cortés has highlighted that the reform violates several fundamental legal principles, including the principle of non-retroactivity and international treaties on human rights. He also stated that it weakens the function of the Supreme Court and restricts the ability of courts to protect citizens' rights.
