Senators of the National Action Party (PAN) announced a new suspension of the reform to the Judiciary of Mexico, the second in a week. The ruling was issued by the Third District Court in Baja California, in response to the amparo lawsuit filed by senators Susana Zatarain and Gustavo Sánchez against the election of judges in 2025 in Mexico.
The suspension prohibits authorities from applying the provisions of the reform that came into effect on September 16, pending approval from Congress and local legislatures. The judicial measure includes the suspension of the electoral process in the upper house of the Mexican Congress, as well as abstaining from following up on the call to create lists and taking oaths of the eventual winners of the election.
It is also requested that state congresses, Mexico City, the National Electoral Institute (INE), and the Judiciary Council refrain from executing the decree and guarantee judges' salaries. Guadalupe Murguía, coordinator of the PAN senators, emphasized that the government of Claudia Sheinbaum must respect the separation of powers and comply with resolutions related to the reform to avoid jeopardizing the autonomy of the Judiciary.
This suspension adds to the one achieved on October 17 by Deputy Laura Ballesteros of the Citizen Movement (MC). President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that they will not eliminate the official publication of the reform, as she believes that the amparo lawsuit is not applicable to constitutional reforms and that the judging authority overstepped its functions.
