Supreme Court Upholds Sentence for Colosio's Assassin

On October 23, 2023, Mexico's Supreme Court upheld the 45-year sentence for Mario Aburto, who confessed to assassinating presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio in 1994. This decision follows an appeal that sought to invalidate his conviction, keeping him in prison indefinitely.

Supreme Court Upholds Sentence for Colosio's Assassin

On October 5, 2023, a Collegiate Court of the State of Mexico granted amparo to Mario Aburto, sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio. The amparo aimed to invalidate that conviction and allow the issuance of a new sentencing under state laws.

However, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has decided to keep Mario Aburto Martínez in prison. The First Chamber of the SCJN revoked the amparo granted by the Collegiate Court of the State of Mexico on October 23, nullifying the possibility of a new sentence for Aburto.

After being suspended since September 25 due to a tie in the voting of the ministers, it was finally decided to revoke the amparo. Ministers Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá and Loretta Ortiz Ahlf voted to dismiss the amparo, while Margarita Ríos Farjat and Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena voted in favor.

The final decision was made this Wednesday, with the decisive vote of Minister Lenia Batres Guadarrama. With this resolution, Mario Aburto Martínez will continue to serve his sentence in Cefereso No. 12 in the state of Guanajuato for an indefinite period.
