Ex-Inegi Advisors Warn of Neofascism in Morena

Alfredo Figueroa, former advisor of the IFE, and Jacobo Dayán, director of CCU Tlatelolco, expressed their concern about the trend they observe in Morena, a party they consider is adopting neofascist tones and moving away from democratic rights. According to Figueroa, some behaviors of those in power in Morena are approaching fascism by seeing themselves as the only responsible ones for the only people and as custodians of the only morality, ignoring the diversity of opinions in the country.

"When they see themselves as the custodians of the only morality that exists, of the only people that exists, of the only interpretation that exists, they place themselves in a worldview that approaches fascism," said Figueroa. For his part, Jacobo Dayán pointed out that although it is not traditional fascism, Morena has neofascist tones by positioning itself as a totalitarian regime where only the people who vote for Morena are valid, showing antidemocratic and ultranationalist traits.

Regarding the stance of Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, both experts agree that by stating that no one can oppose the people, it is being ignored that her government represents only a part of the citizenry. Figueroa warned about the danger of holding the idea of being the only interpreters of the people, which can lead to authoritarian proposals far from democracy that have been fundamental in the 20th century.

Furthermore, Figueroa mentioned that these proposals have been accompanied by acts related to corruption, contradicting the image of progressivism and leftism with which Morena had presented itself. Dayán added that the only way to counter this situation would be through the internal voices of the party, emphasizing that those who prioritize the public good and democracy over political or personal interests will be remembered differently in history.

Both specialists agree that it is vital for the internal voices denouncing these authoritarian practices to become public to prevent such behaviors from distancing Morena from the democratic principles on which Mexican society is based.
