Judicial Workers to Engage in Dialogue on Constitutional Reform

Workers of the Judiciary informed that starting next week they will participate in dialogue tables in the Chamber of Deputies regarding the constitutional reform published on September 15 in the Official Diary of the Federation. After meeting with the president of the Political Coordination Board of the Chamber of Deputies and coordinator of Morena, Ricardo Monreal, they announced that the topic of the judicial career and other concerns regarding the constitutional amendment would be addressed.

Irma Elizabeth Monzón Velasco, secretary of the Court, who was accompanied by Patricia Aguayo and a commission of judicial employees, stated in an interview after the meeting: 'We are defending not only our human rights but also the human rights of the population.' She emphasized that there are 55,000 workers in the Judiciary defending their labor rights and their jobs because some of them have worked for many years.

Since August 16, Judiciary workers agreed to start a work stoppage in protest of the discussion at that time regarding the reform of the Judiciary sent by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The Federal Judiciary Council (CJF) issued a statement on September 20 detailing the extension of the work stoppage in federal courts and tribunals until October 2, as it was determined in an extraordinary session that the conditions to lift the suspension do not exist.

With 684 votes in favor and 572 votes against, federal judges and magistrates decided to end the national work stoppage in the Judiciary on October 12, which began as a protest against the reform. Thus, after 51 days of protest for the first time in the history of the Judiciary, federal judges and magistrates opted for the resumption of work starting Wednesday, October 16, while ensuring that they will resort to other modalities to demand their claims.
