The Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, visited the Head of the Vatican State, His Holiness Pope Francis, in a private meeting. During the audience held in the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican, the state leader presented the pontiff with a guayabera, among other items representative of the various regions of the entity.
In the meeting with the Supreme Pontiff, the Governor of Oaxaca addressed common interest topics such as emigration, the fight against poverty, among others. There was also an exchange of opinions on issues related to the current regional and national affairs of the country.
The Oaxacan leader expressed the importance of fighting for respect and dignity towards indigenous peoples through intercultural dialogue spaces and fully recognizing identity, language, traditions, and heritage. "I made it known that in Oaxaca we started the path to transform the historical relationships marked by discrimination and exclusion," he said.
Jara Cruz recalled that the Head of the Catholic Church has asked for forgiveness for the crimes against indigenous peoples during the evangelization in Mexico. "He has been humble, self-critical, and has placed on the public agenda issues of great relevance such as denouncing poverty, inequality, and the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few," he emphasized.
