The Attorney General of the State of Chiapas has announced that it has achieved the linking to process of Edgar "N", identified as the alleged material author of the qualified homicide of priest Marcelo Pérez Pérez, which occurred on October 20. After analyzing the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor's Office assigned to the FGE, the Control Judge decided to link the accused to the process for his possible participation in the qualified homicide of the priest.
As a precautionary measure, justified preventive imprisonment was determined for the defendant, granting a period of three months to carry out a complementary investigation under the same precautionary measure. The Attorney General's Office has assured that it will continue with the investigations to clarify the facts and has reaffirmed its commitment to applying the Rule of Law, ensuring that no illegal action will go unpunished.
The governor of Chiapas, Rutilio Escandón, reported two days after the murder of the priest that the alleged material author of the homicide had been detained, thanking the justice authorities for the arrest. Following the murder of Father Marcelo Pérez, numerous criticisms, demands for justice, and calls against impunity were generated from various sectors, including religious groups, human rights defending organizations, and the general citizenry. This was due to the high levels of insecurity experienced in Chiapas because of the actions of organized crime.
