The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that the National Electoral Institute (INE) will proceed with the organization of the first popular elections of the Judiciary on June 1, 2025, after the Electoral Court dismissed the injunctions against it. Sheinbaum celebrated the Court's decision and emphasized the importance of this resolution in her morning conference.
The president stressed that despite the nearly 140 judicial injunctions received, the electoral process for the election of judges, magistrates, and ministers of the Judiciary of the Federation will continue under the coordination of the INE. This measure comes in the context of the judicial reform, enacted by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador on September 15, which establishes the election by popular vote for these positions starting in 2025.
Despite rulings that attempted to halt this reform, including an order to Sheinbaum to eliminate its enactment, the president and her party alliance in Congress have decided not to comply with the judicial suspensions, arguing that the Judiciary cannot stop constitutional reforms.
Furthermore, Sheinbaum highlighted that the Federal Judiciary Council ordered the resumption of activities after a strike initiated on August 21 by the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges in opposition to the initiative. The president emphasized that this decision represents an acknowledgment of the reform process of the Judiciary, indicating that it is an important determination reflecting the will of the Mexican people.
