Judicial Reform Controversy in Mexico

In his morning conference on Thursday, October 24, the president mentioned that, according to the law, a publication from the Official Gazette of the Federation cannot be removed, but a new publication must be made. For her part, Judge Nancy Juárez specified that the request is to withdraw the publication and insisted that the law does not prohibit the removal of a publication, having precedents in which errors in previous editions have been corrected.

Judge Nancy Juárez Salas of the Nineteenth District in Veracruz warned that if the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum does not comply with the order to withdraw the reform to the Judiciary from the Official Gazette of the Federation, the case will be referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office. It was explained that the government had the opportunity to appeal the resolution but did not do so, which is why it must now comply with the judicial ruling.

President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the law of the Official Gazette of the Federation does not allow for the removal of publications, as requested with the reform to the Judiciary. It was clarified that a modification is not being requested, but rather the removal of the publication in question. If no appeal is presented to change the decision, legal measures will be taken that could lead to criminal consequences.

Judge Nancy Juárez indicated that if no appeal is presented to modify the final suspension of the judicial reform, the Public Prosecutor's Office will be involved to proceed criminally. A deadline was established until noon that same day to file an appeal and avoid the suspension of the reform; otherwise, President Claudia Sheinbaum could face sanctions ranging from imprisonment to disqualification from holding public office.
