Significant Budget Cuts for Mexico's Supreme Court

The Chamber of Deputies significantly cut the resources requested by the Supreme Court for 2024, with a reduction of 321.9 million pesos (equivalent to 5.3% of what was requested), marking the largest cut in the last ten years. Despite this, the Supreme Court has managed to expand its services and meet the growing demand, improving spending efficiency through a policy of rationality and austerity.

In the last five years, the Supreme Court has used almost 99% of the budgets authorized by the Chamber of Deputies. As part of adjustments following the judicial reform, the salaries of judges and public officials in leadership positions were reduced to comply with the guideline that judicial officials earn less than the President of the Republic.

The budget for 2025 for the highest court has already been approved and includes a 1.4% decrease compared to the previous year. A total of 5,922 million pesos was requested to cover operations and personnel salaries. A significant part of this budget will be allocated to personal services, key for fulfilling the task of administering justice.

The budget project for 2025 is based on rigorous planning that identifies the essential resources to fulfill institutional responsibilities, in line with the principles of rationality and effectiveness in spending. Adjustments are anticipated throughout the fiscal exercise in accordance with applicable legislation.

The aim is to guarantee respect for the labor rights of the public officials of the Supreme Court, including the salaries and benefits established in the current General Labor Conditions. This approach includes downward adjustments in the salaries of judges and public officials in leadership positions, in compliance with the regulatory framework.
