The locality of San Luis de la Loma, located in the municipality of Tecpan de Galeana, on the Costa Grande of Guerrero, has emerged as the stronghold of one of the most powerful criminal groups in the region. Led by Salvador Granados Vargas, also known as 'Chava Granados' or 'The lord of the mangoes,' this group, called 'Los Granados,' has maintained its hegemony in municipalities such as Tecpan de Galeana, Atoyac de Álvarez, and Coyuca de Benítez, displacing a rival group called 'Los Rodríguez.'
According to reports leaked by the collective Guacamaya Leaks, 'Los Granados' have distinguished themselves by criminal acts, including the murder of at least 13 agents of the Public Security Secretariat of the municipality of Coyuca de Benítez on October 23, 2023, apparently in retaliation for refusing to join the cartel. In response, in the early hours of October 24, a confrontation occurred in Tecpan de Galeana between the criminal groups, resulting in the death of three alleged hitmen and the detention of five others by the Mexican Army.
The rise of 'Los Granados' as a relevant criminal group dates back to 2008, when confrontations erupted between Rogaciano Alba and Rubén 'El Nene Granados' for control of the Sinaloa Cartel after the division of Joaquín 'El Chapo Guzmán' and Arturo Beltrán Leyva. Since then, 'Los Granados' have maintained their dominance over the towns and communities along the corridor of the Costa Grande of Guerrero.
Rivalry with other criminal groups intensified in 2016, following the murder of leader Salvador Granados' son in San Luis de la Loma. Since then, incursions by various criminal cells seeking to control the Costa Grande region of Guerrero have increased.
