Legal process to revoke the governor of Sinaloa

Members of various civil society organizations in Sinaloa began a legal process on October 24 to revoke the mandate of Governor Rubén Rocha Moya due to the situation of ungovernability in the entity.

Miguel Ángel Murillo Sánchez, who leads this initiative, expressed that the position of governor is too much for Rocha Moya and that his resignation would be the best for Sinaloa. He pointed out that the decision to revoke his mandate is motivated by the violence and ungovernability that have affected the state for more than a month and a half, with incidents such as daily shootings and murders.

On behalf of several non-governmental organizations, Murillo Sánchez officially presented the request for the revocation of mandate before the Electoral Institute of Sinaloa. The process will follow its course according to the law, which allows for the initiation of such processes starting from November 1, when three years of Rocha Moya's government are completed.

Three months will be granted from November 1 to collect signatures amounting to 10% of the electoral roll in at least 11 of the 20 municipalities of Sinaloa, a necessary requirement to carry out the revocation of mandate.

The Secretary General of the Government, Feliciano Castro Meléndrez, reported that the government has approved the inclusion of the figure of Revocation of Mandate in the local Constitution to allow society to remove a governor before the end of their term if it considers that they have not been effective.

The process for the revocation of the mandate of Rubén Rocha Moya may begin on November 1, 2024, when the first three years of his administration are completed, provided that the established requirements are met, including the support of at least 10% of the electoral register, that is, 236,912 citizens in 11 municipalities of Sinaloa.
