Political Turmoil Over Judicial Reform in Mexico

The Senate of Mexico has deemed it improbable to comply with a court order to eliminate a recent judicial reform. The debate centers around the powers of President Claudia Sheinbaum and the judicial authority.

Political Turmoil Over Judicial Reform in Mexico

The judge of the Nineteenth District in Veracruz, Nancy Juárez Salas, explained in a radio interview this Thursday that President Claudia Sheinbaum and the authorities had the opportunity to file resources against the resolution to remove the judicial reform from the Official Gazette, but by not doing so, they lost that option and must comply with the ruling.

On the other hand, the Senate of the Republic approved an agreement declaring the judge's order to eliminate the reform to the Judiciary as inadmissible. The president of the Senate's Directing Board, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, mentioned that the president does not have the authority to carry out this action, making it unfeasible and impossible to comply with the order.

The Legal Advisory of the Presidency of the Republic stated that the elimination of the reform is legally and materially impossible, as the publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation is a completed and irrevocable fact. A request was sent to the Legislative Power to consult the feasibility of eliminating the reform requested by the judge.

In this context, Judge Nancy Juárez Salas reiterated that the federal government must comply with the order to remove the reform to the Judiciary from the Official Gazette of the Federation. The office of the legal advisor of the Executive sent a request for legal consultation to the Legislative Power regarding the feasibility of eliminating the publication in question.
